Chapter 5: Facing the Mini-Boss

Nick had read a few webnovels in his time. Sure, he spent most of his life playing gacha games, but he wasn't blind to the finer pastimes of life. Usually, in those books, he would have some kind of system or cheat by now.

He had killed some mobs; shouldn't that grant him a level-up?

Obviously not. Just the aura emanating from the Goblinmaster seemed to be destroying his sword.

Cursing his rapidly degrading weapon, Nick backed away from the Goblinmaster, holding his shield high in defense. The Goblinmaster smiled as he followed his prey, his long bat creating sparks as it dragged along the floor.

Unlike the goblins, who were small, 3-foot-tall green blobs of stupidity, this Goblinmaster was an actual warrior. He stood even taller than Nick—at least 6 foot 1. His beer belly hung lazily from his waist, just like the other goblins. However, his arms were dotted with scars and tattoos.

Each one probably signified a victory. Two tusks rose from the bottom of his smile, almost piercing his Pinocchio nose.

Nick looked into its dark, beady eyes, watching as they filled with life and energy.

A crash soon followed as a table splintered, sending wood flying everywhere. The Goblinmaster dragged his hammer through the remnants of the table, not bothering to pick it up. Any stray wood would just be pulverized by his steps.

Nick instantly knew his puny shield would be worthless. A small part of him wanted to keep it for its fake protection, but he knew better. In this world, he had far more mobility options than in a regular RPG.

Besides, when he was younger, Dark Souls had forced him to practice barrel rolls religiously. Looking at his rapidly decaying sword, Nick knew he had to go on the offensive quickly.

Otherwise, this short escapade into this game world would end very prematurely.

Nick threw his shield at the Goblinmaster and rolled behind a table, keeping his distance while maintaining his view of the mini-boss. Gripping his sword tightly, Nick steeled his nerves. If he made a mistake, he'd die.

This time, he knew that death would be permanent.

A ferocious yell erupted from the Goblinmaster as he tossed the feeble shield aside. Its death-seeking eyes instantly found Nick again, and this time, he threw his club.

Nick wasn't expecting that, but his body moved almost on its own. Rolling at the last second, Nick flinched as the entire wall behind him cracked, threatening to collapse the entire roof on them.

'This dude is frickin' crazy!'

Small chunks of the stone roof fell. Most were barely larger than pebbles, so there was nothing to fear. Yet.

But the Goblinmaster was a raging lunatic, rushing through tables to retrieve his club. The entire battlefield had turned into a mess of jagged chunks of wood. Looking to where the old weapon rack had been, Nick saw it was destroyed as well.

If he didn't kill this stupid oaf soon, it was going to destroy the entire room and cause the walls to cave in. When that happened, his chances of survival would plummet.

'A roof falling on top of me probably isn't that good for my health.'

Wood began snapping and creaking everywhere. The Goblinmaster picked up his bat again, already looking for Nick.

Keeping low, Nick studied the idiot as it scanned the area.

He held his sword high and his arms loose, ready to pounce at a moment's notice. Where he got these skills from, he had no idea, but they were very welcome. If he had been his old self...

Nick rolled just moments before the bat struck the ground. The stone floor cracked under the weight of the blow, causing a shockwave that made the walls shake. Paying no mind to safety, Nick took full advantage of this situation.

The mini-boss yanked his bat free just as Nick attacked its defenseless body, slicing deep into its side.

Unlike the goblins before it, this one wasn't ready to die after such a feeble strike. Instead, it smiled as it looked at Nick, raising its hand.

The next instant, he was slapped into the wall. His vision turned dark as he heard cracks spreading behind him. The ceiling was nearly ready to cave in.

In video games, scenarios like this rarely happen. When facing a dragon capable of ending the universe, it was accepted that walls were invincible. For the most part, it was simply too taxing to allow too much environmental damage.

That wasn't the case here, of course. Even if there were many game elements, real-world physics still applied.

Meaning, with every movement the Goblinmaster made, it was creating its own grave. Dropping his sword, Nick rolled again, feeling more nimble than ever.

The bat swung into the wall, creating an intricate web of cracks running up the wall and across the ceiling of the cave. Just a few more strikes...

Looking behind him, Nick made sure to keep the path to the exit in mind.

Roaring yet again, the Goblinmaster swung its bat with such ferocity that if Nick hadn't dodged at the last second, there wouldn't even be red mist left.

Sadly for the mini-boss, it faced an opponent with a brain. Taking full advantage of the combination of real-world physics and game logic, Nick dodged again.

He had full mobility, and because he had no weapons equipped, his nimbleness was unmatched. The Goblinmaster only knew to attack, so even as it was creating its own grave, it wouldn't stop.

The last few cracks formed on the ceiling before it collapsed, unable to support its weight any longer. Nick had just left the room an instant earlier, and the Goblinmaster lunged in an attempt to grab him.

A huge slab of rock fell on its head, instantly shattering its skull and crushing its brain. Many rocks followed, and all that remained was the Goblinmaster's hand. Everything else was buried.

Now that the mini-boss was dead, Nick patiently awaited the signal for his level-up. In some games, a character would inform him; in others, they were lazy and just flashed a message across his screen.

Hopefully, it wasn't like Oblivion, where he had to sleep to level up.

He waited a few seconds before feeling hopeless. No kind of signal appeared. Instead, he just had a new objective.

>--< Objective Complete >--<

--(Kill Goblinmaster)--

>--< New Objective >--<

--(Clear Goblin Nest)--

'This is so stupid! Aren't games supposed to level you up as you progress for player retention or some bullcrap!'

A group of goblins came to investigate the ruckus, only to find their meal had escaped. Brandishing their weapons and screaming, the goblins charged.

"Die! Food die!"

'Crap. I threw away my weapon too...'

Unless...

Nick grinned as the rusty sword was summoned from his hammerspace. It looked a lot more worn, and he knew if he checked his inventory, its durability would be nearly depleted. However, for now, it would do its job.

Within seconds of flashing steel slicing flesh, the goblins were dead. He still didn't get the satisfying ding of a level-up, but markers appeared on the walls and behind him and above him. He assumed these were quest markers, showing where the goblins were.

Thirteen left to kill, and then the tutorial quest should be done.
